The horoscope is divided into twelve segments beginning at the ascendant. This classification can be assigned according to various systems; there are tables of houses by Placidus, Monteregius, Koch, Campanus and Grimm, although Placidus and Koch are most commonly used. Each house has a relationship with a particular sign and planet, for example the third house corresponding with Gemini, the third sign and Mercury, the ruler of Gemini, have related qualities. The signs describe how the energies represented by planets are utilized, whereas the houses stand for the corresponding aspects of life. The positions of the houses reveal relationships to everyday experiences; they are the earthly scene of events.
